Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from my upcoming release, Sons of Sinners, a dark MC m/m romance. Don’t forget to check out the other book hooks from participating authors HERE.

One was built to be a weapon. The other was born to be his salvation.

Blurb: Reluctant biker prince Sloan is trapped in a brotherhood that would execute him for his secret trysts with men. Sick of wearing a mask, he is escaping to British Columbia, but his plans are dashed when he’s caught in the crosshairs of a predator—Ajax, the lethal War Chief whom Sloan secretly craves.

Ex-con Ajax wants out of the Ojibway street gang that raised him. With three bodies to his name, he is the Syndicate Skins’ most feared weapon and the reason his uncle tasks him with kidnapping the rival prince for a hostile takeover of Winnipeg’s North End. When Ajax abducts Sloan, he’s prepared to do whatever it takes to break the handsome biker. But the only man Ajax burns for proves to be a formidable force, capable of penetrating the War Chief’s stone-cold armour.

When the ransom is refused, Sloan’s survival depends on a desperate gamble, forcing the two adversaries to give in to the explosive tension building between them. But to secure their guaranteed happily-ever-after, Ajax must turn on the uncle who raised him, and Sloan must gut the father who betrayed him—or the future they are running for will be destroyed in a single night.

CONTENT WARNING: Sons of Sinners is an intense, high-stakes dark M/M romance. It contains graphic depictions of captivity, power imbalances, severe physical assaults, survival sex, and explicit on-page violence. This book also features racially charged dialogue and gritty, street-accurate slurs to reflect the raw animosity of the fictional gang war. These terms strictly belong to the world of the characters and do not represent the views of the author. Reader discretion is strongly advised.

“It’s mine.” Uncle thrust his finger holding the cigarette into Ajax’ chest. “The blocks are mine. We didn’t take them down five years ago for nothing.”

Uncle was referring to the street war he had Ajax initiate with the killings of the Winnipeg Warriors’ president and vice-president. What was left of the street gang had scattered far to the edges of the neighbourhood.

“It belongs to the true reds and nobody else,” Uncle Toad went on. “The Hellions are fucking immigrants who don’t belong here, just like the rest of the cocksuckers in this useless country.”

“And?” Ajax hauled another drag off the cigarette, drawing the smoke deep into his lungs, along with a helping of cold air.

“Get the chump that was just here,” Uncle ordered. “You know where to take him.”

So Uncle wanted to kidnap the crown prince of the Hellions. The surveillance the sly fucker had Ajax run on Sloan for the last three months brought the pieces of the puzzle sliding together. This wasn’t a problem because the intel had given Ajax a winning full house against Sloan’s two-pair secret.

What a fucking brainless fool the prince of the Hellions was. Only a moron pulled a stunt like sneaking off to a so-called gay bathhouse over on the south side for sex once a week. The blond bitch’s laughable stealth route was another joke.

But a kidnapping would lead to war.

Another fucking war.

Grime seemed to fill Ajax’ throat. He’d been picked up by the police, handcuffed, booted around, threatened by cops to flip, stalked by retaliating Warriors, shot at, and knifed five years ago. Could he endure this again with the retaliation being ten times worse from the Hellions?

“Don’t be turning pussy on me now.” Uncle’s gloved palm met Ajax’ cheek with a patronizing tap. “It’s almost all ours. We are this close.” He used his index finger and fat thumb to present the power he was probably already tasting.

Ajax ignored the tap. “You know they got an army backing them.”

“Don’t you ever fucking question me again,” Uncle Toad shot back, his face a cold breath away from Ajax’. “I’ve been planning this for a long time while you sat in Stony.”

“You remember why I had to waste two years there.” Ajax shouldn’t say anything, but the bugger’s greed was an itch under his skin.

“It was far from a waste. Stony is ours now. And soon we’ll own every block in the North End. Nothing will move without our say. Nothing.” Uncle Toad grinned, flashing his missing front tooth.

Ajax bit back the words fuck off on the tip of his tongue. Tired. Damned tired. He’d only been out for six months and barely had time to put his feet up, pour a shot of whiskey, and smoke a joint.

Still, he simply said, “Consider him zipped and tied,” while flicking away the cigarette butt. No amount of talking would change his uncle’s mind. “Anything else?”

“Nope.” Uncle Toad laid his palm on Ajax’ shoulder. “Kid, you make a man proud ’cause you never let me down.” Then he banged on the door three times. “That’s it. I got what you’ll need back at my place. Let’s move.”

Ajax nodded just as the big door swung open since it locked automatically from the inside.
