She ran away from her life – straight into his arms.

Blurb: Photography graduate Starla Brower has always regretted not running away from her abusive home when she had the chance, as her older sisters did—especially her sister Electra, who fled with band Torque Converter six months ago. So when she decides to hitchhike away, she’s shocked to find Electra has arranged for the band to pick her up. And when lead singer Valen Lesellane rescues her from a gang of thugs by announcing she’s his fiancée, Starla goes along with it. Why not?

The band’s manager, Mike, is furious at this turn of events and the press attention it receives, but Starla finds Valen’s impulsiveness to be infectious and his touch to be irresistible. Before long she has regained contact with her other sisters and finds herself finally able to be happy, both with Valen and with her family.

But with her parents pursuing her and Mike fiercely against her relationship with Valen, can their unexpected engagement last beyond the bus tour?

“It’s just so weird hearing from her after all this time. I thought she’d cut all contact, like Daisy.”

Electra sighed.

“I think they were worried Mum and Dad would force us to tell them where they were. You know they’d have taken it out on us if we’d refused to show them our phones.”

“They did that anyway.”

Starla had been much younger when Daisy and Juno had left, but she remembered very clearly how her parents had reacted. Her father had screamed at them for hours. Her mother had taken her belt to them. She hadn’t resented it at the time—she’d just been glad her sisters were out of it, even though she had missed them terribly.

Electra leaving, on the other hand—that had been worse. And as Electra looked at her, she had a feeling her sister was realising it.

“What happened to you after I left? Anything?”

“Well, I was the only one left. So yeah.”

“What?”

In response, Starla pulled up her sleeve to reveal a large, partially healed burn scar on her forearm.

“They held the iron down on me.”

A dark expression crossed Electra’s face.

“Did they take you to hospital after?”

“No. I went by myself. Pretended it was an accident. I don’t think they believed me.”

“That’s what we do, isn’t it?” Electra shook her head. “When Aaron noticed my scars, I just told him I was clumsy as a kid. That’s how they got away with it. Nobody ever tells the truth about it.”

Starla’s answer was cut off by the door flying open, revealing Valen standing there with an expression somewhere between shock and disgust.

I’ve been enjoying Tanith Davenport’s Rock My World series, so when Get Out of Here came up to read and review, I was in.

These are short reads, and so is Get Out of Here.  First off, I liked Starla.  She’s the youngest of her sisters, looking to escape her abusive home since she is the only one left after her sisters found a way out.  Then there’s Valen Lesellane, an impulsive rock star who takes a shine to Starla when she encounters him backstage after his show.  Being impulsive, naturally, he kisses her, but she vanishes into the night before he can do anything more.

This is a wonderful read that focuses on the bonds sisters share.  Because the subject matter is heavy, and we’re dealing with the trope of a fake relationship, I do wish it would have been longer.  Although the author keeps the story tight and doesn’t waste her words, the story could have used another one hundred pages to further flesh out the connection between Starla and Valen.  Or maybe I just wanted more LOL.  Who knows.  I would have liked to have seen a longer “engagement” between Starla and Valen, and even many POVS from Valen and why he agreed to help her since this is Starla’s story.

Still, it’s a great world of music the author takes us in, and I love the setting in England.  I’m a sucker for British novels.  It’s a great addition to the series.  Do yourself a favour and get a copy.

Heat tends to take it out of me, so what I really love to do is go to a cafe, sit outside with a drink and watch the world go by.

I’ll usually take a break from writing for a day or two and come back to what I’m working on with fresh eyes. I find forcing myself to write doesn’t make me very productive.
