I enjoy a good mafia romance, so when I read the blurb, I was all for reading and reviewing.  I’ve also read and reviewed a couple of books by the author, so I knew I was in good hands with this one, and the author didn’t let me down.

I’ve never read a “retelling” novel before.  I will admit I avoid them because they’re not just for me, but I was curious to see what the author would do with a Rapunzel retelling.  I must say I enjoyed it.

Ruby aka Rapunzel was best friends with Orlando when her powerful mafia father separated them and locked Ruby in a tower.  But she has hope because someone always leaves a midnight rose for her, what Orlando used to do when they were kids.  She has no escape until given a chance to further her schooling.

Orlando has quietly built his own empire, albeit not as powerful as Ruby’s father’s, but he has enough backing to save her from the clutches of her awful family who see her as a pawn and nothing more to gain more power.

I must I really liked both characters.  Ruby may appear a damsel in distress, but she’s far from it.  She possesses a lot of inner strength to endure what she has, and she’s also loyal to the friend she once had.

As for Orlando, he is the consummate hero.  There isn’t anything he won’t do for Ruby.  AS a matter of fact, his life, as he grew up, centred on freeing Ruby.

This is a beautiful romantic tale of two lovers torn apart.  The writing is wonderful.  The setting is gorgoeusly painted without being overdone.  And the dialogue is true to character.  Do yourself a favour and get a copy.  It’s the first book in the series and I’m looking forward to learning more about the romance between Orlando and Ruby.
