1. What are your top ten favourite books/authors?
JN: Nancy Kilpatrick, Felicity Heaton, Bram Stoker, Mary Stewart and Bernard Cornwell.
2. What book do you think everyone should read?
JN: The Icarus Deception by Seth Godin.
3. How long have you been writing?
JN: Since I was at school.
4. Do the characters come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?
JN: No, some pop up as I tell the story.
5. What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?
JN: A ton of mythology. Wolf Born has Orcadian mythology in it, that is mythology from the Orkney Islands in Scotland that is not found anywhere else in the world. And British mythology.
Dragon Born has Orcadian and Greek and Shadow Born British mythology, more occult, like Babylonian necromancy! And some historical legends that I used and changed for the story.
6. Do you see writing as a career?
JN: Definitely. The greatest thing, making people happy. It’s a strange job though, when I have reviews that people love characters because, well they come from my head. I made them up! It’s like I’m creating and sharing worlds, and some people want to join in. That’s a cool feeling, you can’t buy it.
7. What is your favourite genre to read?
JN: Urban fantasy/ historical fiction and paranormal romance. Yes, I read a lot.
8. Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
JN: Depends really. I wrote the battle scenes in Dragon Born listening to the Muse album, Simulation Theory so I think the energy is very high and fast, the music definitely drove me along! Other times I prefer silence.
9. Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
JN: I’m writing three at the moment!
10. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
JN: Dracula!
11. Pen, typewriter, or computer?
JN: Computer. But, that said when I was commuting I used my huge iPhone 6 plus and google docs. I would write anything from 500-1k words on the way to the office, then at lunch, then the same on the way home.
I’ve written over 500,000 words on my phone. (I had to commute a lot!) And earphones in, music on…
11. Do you have any advice to give to new authors?
JN: Yes, write every day. Read how to plan your story, read books, write on your phone if you have to, (use google docs- it saves every few seconds). Study the craft and write in a series!
12. What makes a good story?
JN: Character development.
13. What are they currently reading?
JN: The Wicked Day by Mary Stewart.
14. What is your writing process? For instance, do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?
JN: Yes, I outline the story, that said I usually know my characters before I plan.
15. What is your writing Kryptonite?
JN: I crave descriptions, I’m always looking to deepen or improve these.
16. Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
JN: Yes, especially with character development/ traits and romance. I’m happy hitting the troupes but I don’t write stereotypical characters.
17. If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
JN: Write books, don’t stop!
18. What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
JN: No, you see I write what we want! It’s great actually!
19. Do you believe in writer’s block?
JN: Yes. Do research, read something in a similar genre or watch something in a similar genre!

“Anyway, I’m glad you’re safe, are you ready to come back to my home?”
“You really think the Nuckelavee would find me here? How? It’s not that I don’t appreciate your offer and I love your company, it’s just I’m used to looking out for myself, I’m not used to depending on others.” I didn’t want to sound ungrateful but I wasn’t comfortable with staying at Conor’s, a guest is fine for a few days. Any more feels like a scrounger or a child.
