1. Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?
Dana: All of the main characters are set when I start a book, but secondary and random characters come along as the story develops.
2. What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?
Dana: I do lots of research. Reading up on it or hands on depending on the specifics of the book.
3. Do you see writing as a career?
Dana: I would love to switch my career to writing. It is on my mind each time I complete a book.
4. Do you read yourself and if so what is your favourite genre?
Dana: Between a full-time job, my love for traveling and writing I don’t have much time to read, but when I do I love reading historicals.
5. Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
Dana: I like white noise in the background. Most times it’s a Disney movie playing.
6. Tell us about a favourite character from a book.
Dana: Baptiste St John, from the Power of the Bayou, is the bad guy but I loved creating him.
7. What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?
Dana: I was the kid that said, when I grow up I’m going to be an author. I will continue to write books until people hear my name and know I’m an author even if they haven’t read a single book.
8. Describe your writing style.
I don’t know if I have specific style. I’m kind of a combination of a panster and outliner.
9. What is your writing process? For instance, do you do an outline first?
Dana: My process is the same with every book: I always know the beginning, the middle and the how it will end. I make the outline and fill in key points I don’t want to forget. Once I start writing, the characters tell me how I get to each section.
10. Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
Dana: I have no desire to be a cookie cutter author and give what the masses are looking for. I try to be original with all my books.
11. What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
Dana: Because men and women think so differently it is always hard for me to know how they would react in a situation and make it realistic. I do research on that as well and ask several men random questions to keep the men in my books close to real.
12. Do you believe in writer’s block?
Dana: Absolutely. Sometimes when too many characters are talking at the same time no one can be heard. When that happens I don’t force it. I walk away from the story and do something totally different to relax my mind. After a while, the voices ease and one can be heard to guide the story flow again.
Author: Dana Littlejohn
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Blurb: Twin sisters, Opal and Pearl Jefferson, and their best friend Debra Flores were living blissfully by their no strings attached rule, enjoying the many comforts of a good life. All was well in their world until Frank, Jake, Doug and Rakim entered into it. When one of the girls abandons their well practiced rule and falls in love. Does her decision throw a monkey wrench into the lives of everyone else around her? Or does it open up the possibility for love to capture them all?
“Jake, I’m here! Where are you?”
“I’m in the kitchen, babe!”
Jake sent her a wide and genuine smile over his shoulder when she entered the room. His long legs quickly covered the space between the table and door. He scooped Pearl off the floor and spun her around, giving her a long, deep kiss.
“Damn, I’m glad to see you. It’s been too long since we’ve seen each other. Come sit down.” He pulled her to the table.
“Two days is too long?”
“Sweetheart, two hours is too long to be away from the one you love.” He kissed her hand then pulled out her chair.
“You are so sweet.” She surveyed the table as he poured he filled a second flute handing it to her. “So, what’s all this?”
He sat across from her. “This, honey, is a celebration.”
“Really? What are we celebrating?”
“Well, we’ve got an anniversary coming up, don’t we? Next month will be a whole year since we started seeing each other, and I think it’s time we took this thing to the next level.” He tapped his glass to hers before taking a sip. “Don’t you?”
Pearl took a drink then rolled the glass between her hands. “Are you sure that’s what you want, Jake?”
“Yes, it’s what I’ve been wanting.” He pushed a bowl of strawberries toward her and leaned on the table. “I gotta tell you Pearl, I don’t want to keep doing this. I’m starting to think you’re, you know, maybe a little embarrassed to be seen with me.” He turned pain filled blue eyes to her. “Are you?”
“No, Jake, of course not.” Pearl went around the table to sit on his lap. “We have a nice quiet existence. What’s wrong with that?” she added popping a strawberry in her mouth.
“I don’t want a nice quiet existence. I want the whole world to know how happy I am, how happy you make me.” Jake took her hand and kissed it again. “I want to do what other couples do. I want to take walks in the park, go on picnics, out to the movies. I want to walk down the street and hear the old people say, ‘Aww, look at them, they’re so in love.’”
“I— I want more, Pearl.” His voice softened with his plea.
