Maggie Blackbird

Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Today, I have international bestselling author Max Vos in the interview chair. We’re discussing five of his romantic LGBTQ+ releases. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway.

1.  Hello, Max.  It’s great to have you here again.  Can you share what you’ve been up to lately so reader know what may be coming up for them for their TBR pile?

Max:  Hi Maggie, thanks for having me, it’s great to be here again. This seems like a good place to promote my blog. https://max-vos.blogspot.com/

I’ve been working steadily on a new book that takes place in Columbus, Georgia. I’ve had a good time writing it, and it flows well… most of the time. I hope to have it ready after the first of the year. Someone is pestering me to do another Christmas Memory.

2.  I enjoyed your statement on your Goodreads page that there is “something for everyone.”  Can you share what the “somethings” are?

Max: I tend to write a wide variety of subjects. I’ve tackled some pretty tough and taboo issues. People are all so different and my books reflect that. I also like to research and find new things to write. So I have a vampire book, a book that looks at PTSD, a fun series that is more on the sweet side. Each book (or series) brings a new element for readers to enjoy.

3.  Let’s talk about the first book in the spotlight:  Going Home.  Please share what inspired you to create a menage story.

Max:  A lot of that was personal. I knew those men. I based it on their own story. I did have their permission, by the way. It raised quite a ruckus when I published it. Now, it is one of the best-selling books in my backlist.

4.  Your second book in the spotlight is Play Chopin for Me.  The grandmother intrigues me LOL.  Tell the readers what you adore about the grandmother and what makes you shake your head at her.

Max:  There is nothing to ‘adore’ about her. She’s a wicked, wicked woman. I did that on purpose. I needed a really bad antagonist to make that story work. I love that book. I particularly love Chopin. Each time I’ve gone to Paris, I visit his grave. There is one scene in there that I spent a lot of time on. I try and do research so it comes off as being real.

5.  Book three is The V-Unit, which sounds very interesting since it’s a military vampire romance.  Why did you decide to make the military group vampires?

Max:  Believe it or not, I did that book on a dare. I was part of a nano write group. It was a challenge to write a novel in one month. It was another author who dared me to write about vampires. I was like, who can write a vampire story as well as Anne Rice? Then it dawned on me not to make that the main focus, but to write an intriguing story that had vampires in it. I had it finished in ten days. The rough copy of it. Of course, it needed proofreading and editing. That took longer than the time it took me to write the damn thing. I spent so many hours doing research on top of all that.

6.  In book four, Life After Living, you tackle PTSD and loss.  Can you share why you created a novel with two suffering heroes?

Max:  It was while I was living in Florida. I was helping a friend move, and I stopped at a convenience store to get some water. As I was going in, there was a veteran there who was homeless and asking for spare change. I gave him some money and asked him why he was homeless. It was his story that inspired me to write that story. He was a trained mechanic, but he couldn’t find steady work because every time there was a loud noise, he dropped to the ground in a fetal position. He was on a waiting list for the VA hospital. How the US treats its vets is appalling.

7.  The fifth book for your spotlight is A Christmas Memory.  Can you share how you came up with the title, and how it relates to the plot (without giving away any spoilers, of course).

Max:  I was asked to write a Christmas story by my best friend. Christmas Memories is about letting go of old history and writing new. Replacing the bad with good. And honestly, who doesn’t like a good mushy Christmas story? Hell, Hallmark has made a fortune doing that. It was the memory part that plays such a major role there.

8.  How about answering some more random questions?  Here they are:

  • Where is your favourite place in the world to be?
Paris, hands down. I truly love that city. Venice is a very close second.
  • What TV show can you easily binge-watch?
This is going to sound odd to many people, but Designing Women. I love that show.
  • What is your favourite sport to watch/or play?
Pfft… at my age, I don’t play sports. I am an avid Aussie Rules football fan. I watch almost every game. On that note, I’d love to give a shout-out to Sean Kennedy. He has the absolute best AFL love story. I read or listen to it every year before footie season starts. Each time I think about writing one, I say… naw. Can’t beat Tigers and Devils.
  • What is your go-to transportation mode?
My ute. That is my only option. There is no public transport where I live. Want a picture?

9.  Lastly, is there anything else you’d like to add?

Max:  I’ve had some questions as to where I’ve been for the last eight years. I’ve tried to be as open and honest as I possibly can. I ask people to read my blog post for those who are interested.

Lastly, I’d like to thank readers for supporting all Indie authors. Readers in general are some of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure to meet.

Thank you, Maggie. These were some really good questions. I can tell you put some thought into all this. Thank you so much.
