Title: The Rich Guy’s Wife
Series: N/A
Author: Bonnie Traymore
Genre: Psychological Domestic Thriller

When a struggling young career woman gets swept off her feet by a wealthy, handsome guy, she ignores the nagging feeling in her gut that it’s too good to be true. But when she digs into his past, dark secrets emerge. And it might be more dangerous to get out.

Mother’s voice rings in my ears as I stand perfectly still in the darkness, fearing that each breath I take will be my last. I’m crouched down in the closet with blood on my hands, my legs and back aching to move, even an inch.

But I can’t. One twitch, one cramp, and I’ll bang into a shelf and give myself away.

When Stefan Zeigler swept me off my feet four months ago, I had to fight the voice in my head telling me that my new boyfriend was too good to be true: handsome, wealthy enough to own a home in the Hamptons…and totally into me.

Or was that Lucy’s voice, my gal pal attorney friend who doesn’t need a man to live large? Or my mom’s voice, warning me of controlling prenups and the dangerous secrets of the superrich?

I’d always dreamed of a better life, and working my way there wasn’t going so well for me, with my pile of student loan debt, a rent-controlled apartment in Manhattan I could barely afford, and a stable but low-paying PR job.

Is it so bad that I dared to believe in a fairy tale ending, even after I found out about his felon brother? Or his nefarious business associate? Or the fact that his last girlfriend looked a lot like me—and seems to have vanished into thin air?

But now I see that fairy tales have a dark underbelly beneath the glitter, just like my life right now. I’m Erin. I got what I wished for. I’m a rich guy’s wife now.

And it just might be the death of me.

REBECCA meets THE BOYFRIEND in this twisty, unputdownable domestic thriller full of psychological suspense, perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Kaira Rouda, Emily Shiner, Daniel Hurst, and Liv Constantine.

I liked the blurb, and this book is my second thriller (I enjoyed the first), so I was in. Bear with me through my review, as I am new to this genre and still learning what to expect from thrillers since my main reading is in the romance genre.

As stated in the blurb, Erin comes from working-class roots in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.  The author set a good stage for motive because Erin finds herself in a financial crunch with a going-nowhere job.  Even worse, her BFF (I adored Lucy) comes from money and has everything paid for by daddy dearest, while Erin can barely repay her student loans.  She fears she’ll end up like her mother, and that is not acceptable.  What Erin desires is a rich man.  And she meets that man in a bar one night when Stefan appears.

Being part of the working class really bothers Erin, so when Stefan’s behaviour leaves her wondering, she ignores the red flags.  She makes excuses to keep seeing him.  Mind you, she’s no pushover.  She does put her foot down and demands some answers about their relationship.

Then there is Madison.  She comes from old money that is quickly dwindling away.  It’s her husband, with new money, who is taking care of the bills, although she did make the down payment on their home in the Hamptons.  Madison did work once before.  Since she wants out of her marriage, reestablishing her career is imperative.

Stefan has a younger half-brother, Tanner, and he’s also tired of being poor.  He wants some of the money that Stefan has, but being a convicted felon isn’t helping matters.

The author did a great job bringing the cast of characters together.  Bit by bit, they fit like a puzzle.  Are the characters sympathetic and easy to root for?  I’m learning with thrillers, the main characters tend to be quite self-involved.  And what they lack or want drives them, while they ignore everything around them.  Still, they are interesting.  And interesting is what keeps me reading.  Bravo, author.  Job well done.

As for the suspense part, it left me guessing.  Who is the killer?  What is going to happen next?  Each chapter ending left me with no choice but to turn the page LOL, so the author did her job.  I read fifty pages a night on my Kobo, but I quickly ignored that and found myself reading one hundred a night.

Just when I thought I’d guessed the dirty dog, the author fooled me!  LOL.  She leaves plenty of red herrings, keeps the reader guessing, and turning pages.

The writing is excellent, along with the descriptions of New York and the Hamptons.  I really felt as if I was there. As for the dialogue, each character had their voice.  If you are new to thrillers or enjoy thrillers, do yourself a favour and get a copy.  The author is very talented and does not disappoint. Would I read another book from her? You betcha.

Bonnie Traymore is the Amazon bestselling author of ten domestic/psychological thrillers. Her thrillers feature strong but relatable female protagonists who peel back the layers of suburban American life and give readers a peek inside. The plots explore difficult topics such as jealousy, infidelity, murder, and the impact of psychological disorders, but she also includes bits of romance and humor to lighten the mood from time to time.

Bonnie loves Hitchcock movies, psychological thriller novels, coffee, and dark chocolate, not necessarily in that order and sometimes simultaneously. She has a doctorate in United States history and resides in Honolulu with her family. She’s an active member of International Thriller Writers and Mystery Writers of America.

Thanks so much for the great review and for hosting! I’m so thrilled that you liked it. Yes, thrillers have characters that are ambiguous. Some that you love, and some that you love to hate!
