Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I will give you a teaser from She Talks to Eagles, a paranormal time-travel romance. Don’t forget to check out the other book hooks from participating authors here.

He’s shocked that the beautiful girl in the picture is alive…

Maybe the stories of the notorious Route 66 are true. Road trips don’t result in encountering ghosts, but they do for Collin Bird.  When he spies a beautiful girl hitchhiking during a thunderstorm, he can’t believe his eyes.  It’s Rosemary, a young woman from his Ojibway community who went missing over forty years ago.

Rosemary Kakeway is dead.  Her only hope to reach the spirit world is Collin.  Before departing to the place of her ancestors, she seeks vengeance against her killers, and Collin is the man to help her do just that.

A ride with Rosemary through pea-soup fog brings Collin to 1977, where he meets a very much alive nineteen-year-old Rosemary.  The bold and wild girl is nothing like he imagined her to be as she introduces him to a time he embraces.  Knowing they are meant to be together, neither wishes to say goodbye, but that’s up to Rosemary’s spirit in the twenty-first century to decide.

Angry heat continued to boil beneath Rosemary’s skin. Not from their taunts, but their stupid timing. She’d been saving herself for a guy worthy enough, and they’d wrecked it.

Halfway out of the car, she stiffened. The Hardy Boys were the ones who’d hurt her. She bet her precious camera that her guess was correct. Like hell they’d rape her. She’d buy a knife and put it in her pocket. One of those folding kinds she could conceal. Then if anything happened, she’d be prepared.

Collin continued to argue with them, having also gotten out of the car. Even pissed, he kept his voice calm. Maybe nobody got mad in the twenty-first century. She’d have to ask him about that. Perhaps society had evolved beyond hate. Highly doubtful. There’d always be assholes like The Hardy Boys, and rapists wanting to hurt girls. He did say the missing and murdered Indigenous women was a big problem in his century.

“You’ve been warned,” Joe said.

Rosemary darted around the car. If they dared to hurt Collin…

The Hardy Boys said something she couldn’t hear and swaggered to their pickup, clutching their beers and laughing.

Frank threw open the driver’s-side door. He glanced back at her. “You’d better watch it, Pocahontas. When you dress like a slut, men treat you like one. No offense. Right?”

She saved her breath from replying. Her top priority was pinching a knife.
