Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from Dressed for Success, an interracial, May/December contemporary romance. Don’t forget to check out the other book hooks from participating authors here.

Two wounded-in-love go-getters must decide if they’ll break their personal rule that cost them so much in the past by mixing business with pleasure.

Divorcée Bebe Boshey flees her Ojibway community for the city of Thunder Bay to begin anew, landing a great job that affords her an independent lifestyle she covets and a great condo. Best of all, her silver fox boss thinks the world of her. She can’t help her attraction to him, but office dating is a huge no-no.

Divorcé Alden Campbell is tired of spending his nights alone. And he’s also quite uncomfortable about his feelings for his ace real estate agent, Bebe. Even though they are strictly professional in their daily dealings, the sizzling chemistry ready to boil over between them is enough to shake him with fear, because he’s been there and done that.

While they’re on a business trip together, a crafty playboy pushes Alden into making a big decision that might cost him dearly—pursue Bebe and break his rule of business-only, or let Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome work his charm on the one woman Alden wants to call his own.

Alden paced the hotel room. He shouldn’t have come back early. He should’ve gone to the bar with the others after forcing down his surf and turf. But enduring three hours or perhaps longer of loud music, trying to speak over the noise, and a wave of young people preening and posing had been a sentence to the dentist chair, sans the customary freezing, for drilling and fillings.

He clenched and unclenched his fingers. Gareth had joined everyone at the bar, which meant he hadn’t taken Bebe out again. The thought of the two of them gambling last night in the States had torn Alden in half. And the playboy had one more evening to try sweet-talking Bebe into…

Aww, fuck! Jealousy. Plain and simple. The green-eyed monster had reared its ugly head, and it pounded in Alden’s heart and flowed through his veins. If he didn’t act, Gareth would, no matter if Alden had monopolized Bebe for ultra-early breakfasts and dinners. Gareth had also mentioned Bebe had a headache, which was why the good-looking young man had joined the bar party in the first place.

What to do? Alden kept pacing. He stopped and stared at the wall, then at the adjoining door a mere footstep away where Bebe probably lay on her bed, a warm, damp cloth across her forehead to ward off the headache.

He inched away. Maybe if he ordered up a drink, he’d rid himself of these insane thoughts.

The light click was an alarm going off inside his room. That was Bebe’s door. She was in the hallway.

He dashed for his own door and threw it open. His cock almost burst from his pants, and the evil monster of jealousy resurfaced, an ugly shade of pea-soup green. Had she slipped on the black mini skirt painted to her slim hips, spiked heels accentuating her already long legs, and tight top melting against her firm, high breasts for Gareth? Were her luxurious waves cascading down her back curled just so for him, too? Because if that wasn’t a fuck-me outfit, Alden didn’t know what was.

Red flooded Bebe’s face, a deep shade of scarlet that no doubt matched her panties and bra if she’d gotten all sexed up for…sex. Probably satin or lace underwear, flimsy, the kind meant to entice a man to peel off.

“And where are you going?” No, Alden shouldn’t have let the ice coating his heart saturate his steely words, but he couldn’t help himself.

Bebe stepped back. The spike of her heel dug into the plush carpet. “I…I was going to…”

“…go out to…well, it’s apparent what you’re seeking.” He folded his arms.

“What I’m seeking?” She sputtered. The red drained from her face, leaving an angry flash of screw you in her eyes.

Screw him? He only wished. And before he could stop himself, the question fired from between his clenched teeth. “Why not me?”
