Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.
For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from Renewed, the fourth and final book in The Matawapit Family series, a contemporary romance full of destructive family secrets. Don’t forget to check out the other book hooks from participating authors here.

When two former enemies fall in love, family secrets threaten to destroy their fragile union and everything they hold dear.
With their extreme ideas about traditional Ojibway life, the radical Kabatay clan have made enemies in their fight to rid the reserve of Western culture and its religion. Disowned by her family for daring to love the church deacon’s eldest son, Jude, Raven Kabatay longs to put an end to the feud started by her mother, brother, and sisters against the Matawapits…people she’s come to think of as her own since Jude changed her life.
Jude Matawapit suffered a humiliating divorce after his wife left him for another man, but with Raven, he’s created a beautiful, new sanctuary after losing his previous one, and his new haven is everything he’s ever wanted for himself and his children. Only two things could destroy his pristine bliss: the secret he holds close to his chest, and the vengeance Raven’s family wants to exact on the Matawapits. A secret and vengeance that could cost the unlikely lovers their hard-won, much longed for happily ever after.

Jude’s bedroom was just off the kitchen, so he simply kicked the door shut, set the laptop on the dresser, and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Hey…” He held his tea. Boy, if he had to watch his ex-wife look everywhere but at him for ten minutes and then take another ten more minutes to choke out what she had to say, he was hanging up.
“Hi.” Charlene held a glass of wine. Hmm, she’d had the occasional glass on holidays and during special dinners or barbecues, but this was the second time she’d drunk while they talked.
“How’re the hotel accommodations?”
“Okay, I guess.”
“How’s Stephen?”
“He’s…he’ll manage.”
Looked like Mr. Perfect was hurting. Good enough for him. “The annulment…”
“Yes, the annulment. I’m not ready yet. I need time to think. It’s… We both know it’s based on whether the marriage was invalid. Can you say we went into our marriage for the wrong reasons that would deem it invalid?” She spoke in her confident, delicate voice, which used to turn him on. Not anymore. Now he experienced an itch.
“I guess it’s something we have to talk about.”
“Do…you?” She took a large drink.
He wiped his face. “I’ve had time to think. I can admit I’ve been assessing my contribution to our failure.”
She winced.
“We failed.” He shrugged.
“Yes…yes, we did.” She tipped more wine into her mouth.
Jude sighed. “Please…say it.” I don’t have all night. “What you have to say is important to me.” Thank you, Raven and Emery. You’re showing me how to consider someone else’s feelings instead of taking charge.
“It…it is?” She blinked.
“Sure. Why not? We’re talking about our annulment.”
“I thought it’d be better if we could meet face to face.”
She wanted him to fly out to Kenora? It was his turn to blink.
“Do you have plans for this weekend?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“I see…” Her eyes narrowed. “Your…girlfriend.”
He nodded.
“What about the next weekend?”
“Let me check my schedule and I’ll get back to you.” He wasn’t about to make this kind of decision without speaking to Raven. She was a part of his life and deserved to know what was going on.

Hi,
It seems like someone doesn’t want to have an annulment. Jude needs to watch out.

Definitely sounds painful. I smell some kind of trickery from the ex.
