1. Who did the narration on the audiobook and what made you choose them?
Nola: I’m recording the audiobooks myself and really enjoying the process. I had some readers who said they liked listening to the author read the books, so I thought I’d give it a try. Initial reviews for the prequel have been great so I’m recording book 1 of the McCullough Pack right now.
2. How many audiobooks do you currently have and are there any more on the horizon?
Nola: The prequel to the series, a short story about the parents, is out on audiobook on my website, nolalibarr.com/books. They’ll all be available on other platforms as well, but that will take some time as I figure out best practices. I plan on recording all the books in the series and start releasing book 1 in the fall.
3. Do the characters all come to you simultaneously or do some of them come to you as you write?
Nola: Many of them come at the beginning as I’m setting up the story, but a large portion of them come only when they’re needed. They’ll just appear on the page out of nowhere.
4. What kind of research do you do before writing a book?
Nola: I read books in the genre to get me into the mood of that genre. Pirates and fairytale retellings are my next series, so I’ve been reading pirate and fairytale retellings.
5. Do you read, and if so, what is your favourite genre?
Nola: I read in my genre as I love romance, but every once in a while I’ll grab a mystery.
6. Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
Nola: I have to write in complete silence if I’m writing the story. If I’m taking notes of ideas I’m having, I can do that while standing in line.
7. Pen or type writer or computer?
Nola: I write on my computer though I love typewriters and wish I had one.
8. What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?
Nola: I love telling stories, and this is the best career I’ve ever had.
9. What advice would you give to new authors?
Nola: Don’t try to do everything all at once. It’s too much, and there’s always new things coming out to distract you. Pick 1-2 things you want to focus on for the year and get good at those while you’re writing/editing.
10. What is your writing process?
Nola: I do a rough outline. Maybe a handful of bullet points or notes on a sheet of paper. Then, I just start writing. The characters tend to dictate where and what they want to do, and I move the story in that direction if it works. It does mean my rough draft is extremely rough, and I have a lot of notes throughout the first draft that say stuff like “remove Lucian from this point back,” “from this point forward there are three more brothers,” “they no longer live in a castle but live in a simple house in the woods, make changes for first five chapters.” It means the editing process is very involved.
11. What is your writing Kryptonite?
Nola: Procrastination. I’m very good at putting writing off until the deadline is looming in front of me.
