Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers have the chance to jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from Back Where You Belong, a second chance, m/m contemporary romance.

He rejected love the first timeNow he wants a second chance.

Blurb:  After having his love tossed back in his face, Hudson Suggashie has eliminated the word trust from his dictionary. Since his return to his Ojibway community, his suspicions are running high, all because one man is hinting at a second chance—the too-gorgeous and sexy ball-crusher who turned Hudson’s world to black fifteen years ago.

Stephen Brandt knows he screwed up big time when he rejected Hudson’s love, and he’ll do anything to win him back, even if it means being a mere bed buddy to the man whose love he aches to reclaim.

The longer the former best friends engage in their no-strings affair, they want something more—what they lost as teenagers. But Hudson isn’t about to open his heart again, leaving a desperate Stephen searching for a way to earn back the trust he broke, or for the second time, they’ll lose the greatest love either has ever experienced.

Hudson remained at the kitchen table. He made no move to get up and locked his thick fingers around the buttons of his shirt. Slowly, he undid each one.

Stephen’s brain screamed at him to get the hell out while he stood a chance, but his heart kept him parked in the kitchen chair. Why couldn’t he possess the temper and vindictiveness of Hudson?

Even though fear rattled Stephen’s teeth, he couldn’t tear his gaze from the bronzed chest being bared for him. Finally, what he longed for was about to happen, not on the terms he’d hoped for, but it was a start. If he could hold out long enough, maybe there was the chance he could have Hudson’s love once again.

If they were starting the no-strings attached tonight, Stephen had best reach for his own buttons. As he regretfully unfastened them, Hudson’s stare, full of hunger, capable of eating Stephen alive, shook him to his core. While continuing to shiver, he let the garment fall to the floor. Sure, they’d gotten naked many times, even at the hotel, but baring himself for Hudson at the dinner table was Stephen losing his virginity again. He was a teenager, daring to taste the forbidden.

Hudson cast aside his shirt, displaying his bronze skin. He raised his chin in a defiant sort of way, as if daring Stephen to find fault with his physique. There was not an imperfection to be spied on Hudson’s smooth chest and rounded belly that Stephen yearned to touch.

Hudson clamped his fingers around his belt buckle and unfastened the snap.

The beating of Stephen’s heart was vinyl spinning on a turntable faster than thirty-three rpms. He was about to spin right off the record player and hit the wall at full force. Following Hudson’s lead, Stephen also worked his belt open, even though he wished they could undress each other, but perhaps intimacy wasn’t allowed during hookups? It wasn’t like he’d gone cruising when he’d lived in southern Ontario. Even though he knew he’d be used merely for sex, his cock strained against his pants, ready to jump from his underwear.

With a still-blank stare, Hudson lowered the zipper to his jeans.

  1. He was about to spin right off the record player and hit the wall at full force – what a great line! I feel that so strongly. Well done.

“Baring himself for Hudson at the dinner table was Stephen losing his virginity again.” This is a wonderful line! You’ve really captured the conflicting feelings in this excerpt.
