Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from my newest release Her Competition, a multicultural romance with a touch of Christmas.

Two sexy work rivals each want the prestigious promotion for Christmas, but neither expects to want each other.

Driven and determined, Celeste Fisher won’t let anything stop her from anchoring the nightly news. She’s sacrificed a personal life, a love life, and left her Ojibway community to make it in the city. And if that means stomping all over her too handsome and too competitive rival to nail the position, so be it.

Casual dating and one-night stands are all Reed Dumont can spare while building what he covets most—his career. He’s not about to lose out to Celeste, no matter if he can’t keep his eyes off her sexy legs and admiring her just as sexy brain, because sitting in the broadcasting chair is another step up the ladder to thumb his nose at his poor Métis upbringing.

A crisis in a First Nations community sends the adversaries out on the road to cover the story. Snowed in at the hotel, rivals become humans, unable to deny their true private desires. But upon returning to the city, the new lovers face the biggest hurdle that could cost them their budding relationship when one gets the promotion and the other is left holding… frustration. Now they must decide what is worth fighting for: love or career.

“What was it like growing up there—so far from everything?” For once his question wasn’t pure reporter nosiness but one of sincerity, as if he did desire to understand.

Warmth filled Celeste. “It’s beautiful, but it also has its drawbacks.”

“Drawbacks?”

“What all reserves experience. No job opportunities, unless you want to work for the reserve or the police. Or the other aboriginal organizations that have satellite offices there. And trust me, there aren’t many. Try two.”

“Is that why you moved to the city?” He glanced at her and back to the highway.

“Yep. There was no point in returning after I finished university. That’s when I landed my interning position. I go home for visits since I do miss the bush and the lakes. We say bush, never forest.”

“Ah. Gotcha. Is it the lonely kind of missing?” He seemed to be musing more to himself.

“Yeah.” She couldn’t help nodding. “What about you? You grew up in Point Douglas.”

Reed grimaced. “I do my duty there and that’s it.”

“Duty?”

“Not exactly duty. I help my brother coach hockey. My nephew plays on one of the teams.”

He volunteered? Celeste squirmed. “Head coach?”

“No, that’s my brother’s position. I assist.” He flicked his fingers up on the steering wheel. “It’s… well, it is what it is.”

She wasn’t sure what he meant, and she wasn’t about to ask. Maybe she should tease him instead? Their current topic was creeping toward melancholy territory. Melancholy meant trips down memory lane, and she’d disclosed enough about her personal life already. Baring their thoughts led to… intimacy.

It’s hard when romance interferes with business. I love that theme!

    Hello, Maggie,

Rivals to lovers is a much-used trope, but this one feels fresh because of the Firrst Nations connection.

    Hi,

I like the fact that this is a multicultural book. Your excerpts drew me in and I was engaged enough by the excerpt so that I wondered where this story would go.

I was unable to link my MFRWHook so I have posted it here.

    Shalom shalom
