A little bit about the characters…

Collin Bird:  He is the hero of the story.  Not only is he a muscle car hound, he’s restored his grandfather’s 1977 Chevy Nova.  He enjoys hearing about a simpler time before the Internet.  His grandfather was a teenager in the 70s, and Collin is fascinated with this time period.

Of his friends, Collin is classed as the “nice guy,” a category he’s not keen on.  But he doesn’t have it in him to be a “bad boy” like his one buddy.  Or a ladies’ man like another.  You could put him in the Cinnamon Roll category when it comes to heroes.  I needed a very sweet guy to help Rosemary, especially with what happened to her, and Collin is the perfect man to assist.  He’s thoughtful, kind, and gentle.

Rosemary Kakeway:  She is the heroine of the story, and a true teenager of the late 1970s.  Not only is she a free-spirit, she’s also a party girl who enjoys having a good time.  Even though her Ojibway name is She Talks to Eagles, Rosemary isn’t a true embracer of her culture.  She dreams about seeing the world, not whiling away the rest of her life as a wife and mom, living in a typical rez house and working for the reserve.  She dreams of becoming a flight attendant so she can visit all the countries she wants to see.

I thought Collin and Rosemary would clash but also aid each other.  They are very different, but I find writing characters who are opposites is my fave since so much can be learned from someone who has a different viewpoint than you.

He’s shocked that the beautiful girl in the picture is alive…

Blurb: Maybe the stories of the notorious Route 66 are true. Road trips don’t result in encountering ghosts, but they do for Collin Bird.  When he spies a beautiful girl hitchhiking during a thunderstorm, he can’t believe his eyes.  It’s Rosemary, a young woman from his Ojibway community who went missing over forty years ago.

Rosemary Kakeway is dead.  Her only hope to reach the spirit world is Collin.  Before departing to the place of her ancestors, she seeks vengeance against her killers, and Collin is the man to help her do just that.

A ride with Rosemary through pea-soup fog brings Collin to 1977, where he meets a very much alive nineteen-year-old Rosemary.  The bold and wild girl is nothing like he imagined her to be as she introduces him to a time he embraces.  Knowing they are meant to be together, neither wishes to say goodbye, but that’s up to Rosemary’s spirit in the twenty-first century to decide.

Collin had parked the Nova on a side road, where he stood guzzling back a cola, mouth slightly open at the beauty before him.

It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

He whipped on his heel. Rosemary approached, still in the same outfit as last night.

This time her hair didn’t stick to her face. Her dark-brown strands fluttered in the wind behind her like a veil.

“Rosemary…” Last night, he couldn’t bring himself to say her name, much less address her informally, but the name easily rolled off his tongue this evening.

We must go. It is time.

“Go where?” He rounded the vehicle, still holding his cola.

She again appeared in the passenger seat without him seeing her move, nor had he heard the door close, much less open.

We’ll need a shovel.

Collin’s mouth dried, and he tilted the can of cola to refresh with liquid. They were going to her grave. That was all he could think about. Maybe even the place she’d been murdered.

“Okay. We can stop somewhere, and I can buy one.”
