Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from my newest release She Talks to Eagles, a paranormal, time-travel romance.

He’s shocked that the beautiful girl in the picture is alive…

Maybe the stories of the notorious Route 66 are true. Road trips don’t result in encountering ghosts, but they do for Collin Bird.  When he spies a beautiful girl hitchhiking during a thunderstorm, he can’t believe his eyes.  It’s Rosemary, a young woman from his Ojibway community who went missing over forty years ago.

Rosemary Kakeway is dead.  Her only hope to reach the spirit world is Collin.  Before departing to the place of her ancestors, she seeks vengeance against her killers, and Collin is the man to help her do just that.

A ride with Rosemary through pea-soup fog brings Collin to 1977, where he meets a very much alive nineteen-year-old Rosemary.  The bold and wild girl is nothing like he imagined her to be as she introduces him to a time he embraces.  Knowing they are meant to be together, neither wishes to say goodbye, but that’s up to Rosemary’s spirit in the twenty-first century to decide.

Genre(s): Paranormal Romance, Time Travel Romance, First Nations Romance, Contemporary Romance

Rosemary grabbed her bag and trounced from the tent. The dudes from last night sipped coffees, sitting around the remnants of their campfire. One whistled. She shook back her hair and strutted by, attempting to contain her giggle. Then ice seemed to cover her spine. What if they were the ones?

Dammit, Collin and his jaw-dropping news had ruined her trip. She glanced about.

“Hey…”

Footsteps pressed into the gravel. She swiveled.

Guy number three from the tent beside hers approached. “Didn’t think you’d be up this early. You girls were pretty wasted last night.”

“They’re still sleeping.” Rosemary peeked at one of the security guards making his rounds. She let out the breath stuck in her throat.

“Where’s your boyfriend?” The guy slyly smiled. “I sure wouldn’t have gotten up if I had you in my tent.”

She’d let the hunk think Collin was her guy, even though she yearned to toss aside her fear and flirt. “He’s getting us coffees. We’re taking a road trip before grand entry.”

The security guard stopped and lit a cigarette.

What if he was the killer? Rosemary whipped on her heel and darted away from the two men. She fisted her hands. Frustration thumped at the back of her neck. Her life was fucking ruined.

“I’ll see you around,” the dude called out.

Rosemary glanced over her shoulder. The guy stayed put, but the security guard walked in her direction, a beefy man with long hair secured in two braids. Easily, he could overpower her.
