Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from Twisted Beauty, a m/m dystopian romance.

His community or his enemy.  He can’t have both.

Deep in the badlands, long after the fall of modern civilization, Hunter patrols the area as the war chief for his Lakota community.  His latest mission is to hunt down a marauder who robbed his neighbors of their precious goods.  He’ll act as this man’s judge, jury, and executioner.

Having lost everything at his former Ojibway encampment, Chassis is far from home.  He wanders the badlands, a grim reaper bringing death to those with what he needs to survive.  But there is one man courageous enough to challenge him.

When the duo faces off, neither expects the sizzling chemistry to erupt between them, nor for their duel to touch what both have denied themselves.  Now they must choose to either remain together and sacrifice their beliefs, or go their separate ways, losing what they’ve spent their lives searching for—love.

Trust was a big word. Chassis trusted Hunter not to shoot him while he scaled the rock wall, but what he didn’t trust was putting his life in another’s hands. He couldn’t, not after watching his own back for well over a decade, which had kept him alive.

He gripped the next rock and set his running shoe on the other that had a nice crevice to give his toes a grip. Staring upward, he had a full view of Justice’s big ass and nothing more. He couldn’t see Grizzly, Mechanix, or Stix because the fat-rumped beast blocked his view. But they were up there, covering him. The mere thought chilled his skin.

The threesome didn’t possess Hunter’s skill, nor Chassis’. As for Justice, he could outmaneuver the trio, otherwise, they wouldn’t call him the chief. And he wouldn’t have been war chief before that.

The situation was precarious. Anything could happen. Justice wasn’t going down without a fight, especially knowing Hunter was on his way to expose him once they reached the top. The chief’s time was now. Using both hands kept Chassis’ gun in its holster. As for his knife, he’d clipped it to his ankle, and the other was hooked to his waist.

Justice’s snorts carried down to Chassis. The burly guy was having a tough time making the climb, and this wasn’t a flat surface but a slope to scale.

Chassis kept following. They stopped. Justice was drawing himself over the final rock to reach the nest, but he struggled. After a couple of minutes, Stix’ face appeared. He reached out his hand to assist Justice over the edge.

“No. Don’t,” Chassis called out.

Too late.
