EVERYBODY DESERVES A HOME:
One of the themes of the series Earthrise starts is finding a place to put down roots, a place that resonates with who you are and what you want out of life. Reese, the protagonist, is only the most obvious example of someone looking for a home and a family to share it with her⦠the various secondary characters are also displaced misfits hoping to find a place that values their gifts and quirks.
This is part of the larger theme of the setting. Earthrise and her sequels are part of my 35+ book Peltedverse, a place I designed from a very young age to be the future I wanted a passport to, where there were genetically modified animals, friendly aliens, elves (in space!), and, of course, humans. Itβs an optimistic future; though full of challenges, the outlookβs bright and with sufficient grit (and help), people triumph. And if they pay for that victory, then itβs a cost theyβre proud of paying. The Peltedverse is supposed to feel like home to its readers, and its many species have their own themesβ¦ themes that allow people to say, βOh hey, thatβs me!β Whether you like parties, are a devout believer, have a technical mind, are fascinated by languages; whether you like traveling, or youβre a stay-at-home type, whether youβre into the cozy or into the epic, thereβs a species and a series for youβ¦ and part of the fun is finding it!
Here are the major players of Earthrise, for example:
- Reese, our protagonist, is a grumpy human from Mars. Too poor for her taste and too stubborn to give up, sheβs a good representative of the human race in the Peltedverse.
- Hirianthial is one of the mysterious Eldritch, the space elves of the setting. Lovely, enigmatic, and chivalrous, able to literally read minds, heβs the noble impulse made flesh, like the best of the Eldritch.
- Sascha and Irine, the Harat-Shar twins, are furry party animals (literallyβthey are cat people). Loyal hedonists with unexpected depths, theyβre the Peltedverseβs reminders to live in the moment and love hard while you do.
- Kisβehβt, on the other hand, is a Glaseah: something like a black and white furry centaur. The Glaseah are esteemed for their practicality, their love of science and their devotion to their Goddess. When the twins are ready to go off the wall, sheβs there to reel them back in.
- Bryer, the Phoenix, a giant bird alien, is inscrutable. Literally. But the Phoenix, who practice detachment, and think like birds, are a welcome balance to all the mammalian energy. But in case we didn’t have enough of that, we still have….
- Allacazam, the Flitzbe. No oneβs sure what the Flitzbe are (plant? Animal?), but theyβre shaped like fuzzy basketballs, change colors to indicate their moods, and communicate in projected mental impressions. Who needs therapy when they can hug a Flitzbe?
The characters of Earthrise represent six of the 24 known species of the Peltedverse. Iβm betting one of these species will speak to you, and I hope you decide to visit, and maybe, find your new home there.

βWeβre doing what?β Irine exclaimed, striped hands twitching on the mess hall table.
Reese leaned back against her chair, letting her silence speak for her. As she expected, Bryer, the Phoenix, had nothing to say; the giant birdlike creature rested against the front of the chair, straddling it so as to give the full length of his metallic plumage unrestricted space.
Kisβehβt, while obviously perturbed, did nothing beyond wrinkle her dark, furry brow and lay back her feathered ears. She had more limbs than all of them: two black arms, four black and white legs, and two stunted leathery wings protruding from her second, horizontal back. And a tail, black with two white stripes running down it, which currently flicked against the cool floor.
The round ball of fluff on the table between the Phoenix and the Glaseahn only ruffled part of its neural fur, turning from ivory to rosy peach in places.
Irine, in her socks and little else, was pouting. βSo what… we have to ride in like champions and rescue some random spy? For nothing?β
βNot for nothing,β Reese said. βIn return for the money that this person gave me to save me from bankruptcy before you people came aboard.β
βWho is this person, anyway?β Sascha asked.
βWhich one?β Reese asked. βThe spy or the one with the money?β
βBoth,β Sascha said.
Reese smothered a small grin. βThe spyβs an Eldritch.β
βA what!β
That came from so many places at once she couldnβt tell which of them said it first. Kisβehβt got the first words after: βI hear they can start fires with their minds.β
βAnd read your thoughts,β Irine said.
Kisβehβt said, βAnd sense your feelings. They always know when youβre lying.β
βThatβs the last thing we need,β Irine muttered.
βI hear they bathe in honey,β Sascha said.
Reese stared at him. So did everyone else with eyesβeven Bryer. The tigraine shrugged. βSomething to do with keeping their skin white.β
βHoney wonβt bleach skin,β Kisβehβt said. βMoisturize it, maybe. But bleach? Not unless Eldritch honey is actually some other substance entirely…β
βWhat do I know about Eldritch honey?β Sascha said. βTheyβre supposedly all rich, too. And theyβre all princes or princesses. And they all require servants, because none of them know how to take care of themselves.β
Irine shook her head.βIs this guy in for a slap from the universe!β
βHeβs in jail,β Reese said dryly. βI think the slapβs been delivered.β
βThis is troublesome.β Kisβehβt drummed her fingers on the table. βAn Eldritch… this being may have specialized needs, Reese. No one knows what they eat, what their normal medical profile is like, how to treat one thatβs sick… no one even knows how properly to address them or what social or cultural mores they hold to. How are we supposed to save one of these creatures and make him comfortable?β
βIβm not sure,β Reese admitted. βAnd since the packet I received wasnβt exactly forthcoming with any of that kind of material, Iβm not sure weβll be expected to do this perfectly.β She pushed her data tablet to the center of the table with its gleaming pale picture of their charge. βThatβs him. Hirianthial Sarel Jisiensire.β
βSay again?β Sascha said.
Reese repeated it.
Kisβehβt shook her head. βWeβll let you address him.β
βAt least heβs handsome for a human,β Irine said.
βHeβs not human,β Reese said. βHeβs Eldritch. And donβt forget it, if you donβt want him snooping around the inside of your brain. Anyway, thereβs only one thing I think we can take for certainty… youβre not supposed to touch an Eldritch. So if all possible, letβs try to keep bodily contact to a minimum.β
βAwww,β Irine said.
Sascha studied the picture. βAngels, boss, I have to agree with her.β
βYeah, well, if you want to come on to him, be my guest,β Reese said. βJust donβt expect me to put your furry behinds back together if it turns out he can blow things up by looking at them funny. And if we break him, I think our benefactorβs going to be very grumpy.β
βSpeaking of, whoβs the person with the money?β Sascha asked.
βI donβt know,β Reese said. βIβve never seen her face.β
βHer face?β That was Irine.
Reese shrugged. βJust a guess.β
βA trap?β Bryer said into the following silence.
βI donβt know why sheβd bother,β Reese said. βObviously the woman is bleeding rich. If sheβd really wanted to sell me, you and the rest of us into slavery, she could have just hired someone to do it long before now.β
βI wonder who she is,β Kisβehβt murmured. βWho would know an Eldritch? One who left his world? Itβs most peculiar.β
βMaybe we could meet her,β Sascha said.
Irine sniffed. βAnd get her to pay us.β
βFor all I know sheβs the Faerie Queen of Eldritches and heβs her errant prince,β Reese said. βWondering about the assignment is pointless. I owe this person a debt and Iβm going to pay it. If you donβt want to come along, I canβ¦ I can give you your severance pay in rooderberries. Since thatβs all Iβve got left. Anyone want to leave?β
The silence was refreshing. And, though she didnβt want to admit it, a relief. She didnβt want to do this alone.
βNow,β Reese continued, βIf you twins would be kind enough to set a course for Inu-Case, I would be obliged.β

Title: Rose Point
Series: Her Instruments, Book 2
Author: M.C.A. Hogarth
Genre: Science Fiction Adventure, Space Opera
Blurb: Reese is only just getting used to running the Earthrise in the blackβand with an Eldritch in her crewβwhen a trip to a colony world gives rise to a whole new problem: Hirianthial is showing powers that even the Eldritch rarely have, and that only in legend. He badly needs training, support and advice, and the only place he can find them is… at home.
To see the world of the Eldritch is a once in a lifetime opportunity, a thing of fantasies and rumor. And to finally meet the Eldritch Queen, the author of so many of Reese’s windfalls! You’d have to twist her arm to get her to admit it, but Reese can’t wait to go. But a court out of fantasy and a breathtaking land aren’t enough compensation when they come packaged with a rabidly xenophobic species whose world is falling apart. The last thing they want any part of is some mortal interloper.
Is Reese ready for the Eldritch world? Better to ask: are they ready for her?

Her fiction has variously been recommended for a Nebula, a finalist for the Spectrum, placed on the secondary Tiptree reading list and chosen for two best-of anthologies; her art has appeared in RPGs, magazines and on book covers.
