How I keep the sex fresh in my writing:

The topic of sex scenes in romance novels is a great one. It’s also a big reason I wanted to write my own book. I was frustrated with the dull, descriptive scenes with no dialogue. I wanted a little more spice, not to mention my favorite thing—dirty talk. Everyone has different tastes, but I wanted to write what I like.

There are only so many ways to write a sex scene in a straightforward romance novel without any out-of-the-box tropes or kinks. One way to add variety is to add those types of things, but if you’re doing a basic vanilla romance, you have limited options. There’s always a different story leading up to the passion, but I’m talking about the act itself.

In my writing, I try not to use the same sexual act more than once throughout the book. That means there are different sexy times with different bases covered. If they are repeated, they will be in a different position or of a different intensity. I also think it’s crucial not to use the same words repeatedly in the same scene. I have a few favorites that make sense to repeat, but I generally try to mix it up. There’s a lot of synonym searching when I’m writing a scene. I also try to avoid words that could make some people cringe.

The most important thing in my sex scenes is the dialogue. I love it. I will actually skip over sex scenes in other books when there is no dialogue involved. In my opinion, it’s boring. I also tend to like the more alpha male-dominated scenes. I’ll have to learn to soften up, though, because my next book has a male character that is a little more of a softie. But just because a man is sweet doesn’t mean he can’t come out to play in the bedroom.

I’ve been told my sex scenes are one of the best things about my books, so I must be doing something right.

Blurb: Lily knows exactly what she wants in life. To graduate, land a high-paying job, and forge her own way. Nothing will distract her. Until the ultimate playboy, billionaire Sebastian Dubree, barges in. Not to be overlooked, Lily’s longtime crush, Jackson, decides she’s worth the fight.

Reluctant to succumb to either, she quickly becomes a challenge to conquer.

“So, do you take all your new hires to lunch?” she asks in jest.

“Only the ones I’m trying to date.”

“You do this often, then. Oh wait, you don’t date. You’re a one-and-done kind of guy.” Ah, the feistiness I’ve come to look forward to.

“Exactly, so I guess you could say you’re my first… pursuit, that is. See, we each have firsts to give each other.” The look on her face is priceless. I think I just stunned her into silence, but alas, I should know better.

“Oh no, you can give me all the firsts you want, but you won’t be getting mine.”

“I intend to claim them all, Lily. Whether you’ve come to that realization is irrelevant because I plan to start soon.”
