Stuart grabbed Billy by the arm. βDude, dude, you wonβt believe what people are saying.β
Billy was more than prepared for the news. There wasnβt a damned chance heβd tuck his tail between his legs. He was fucking proud to call RenΓ© his boyfriend. Word was slowly leaking out, just as he and RenΓ© had expected. There was no need to stand on a soapbox and make an announcement. They were simply acting like a couple now. Maybe someone had seen them at the movies last week, RenΓ©βs arm slung on the back of Billyβs chair.
βWhat is it?β
βTheyβre saying you and Renny are… well…β Stuartβs gaze darted back and forth to their classmates passing by.
βThat weβre knocking boots? Riding the Hershey highway? Hey?β Billyβs deep chest came out.
βOh man…β Stuart slapped his hand over his mouth. βYeah… thatβs exactly what theyβre saying. I told them not a chance. I said those rumors are bogus. Iβm not sure whoβs starting them. I set them straight.β
βWelp, you can set them straight about this,β Billy ordered in his firmest voice. βIf they wanna make it their nosey business, yeah, weβre seeing each other.β
The color drained from Stuartβs brown skin. βWh-what?β
βYeah. Ask Andrew. He knows.β
βAn-Andrew knows and you didnβt tell me?β Stuart sputtered.
βStu… youβre cool, a top dude, but you couldnβt keep a secret even if someone sewed your mouth shut.β Billy shrugged.
βYou didnβt tell me?β Stuartβs pitch rang higher.
βIβm sorry, man. At the time, we werenβt ready to tell anyone. Then my bro got shot, and RenΓ© made up his mind he was done hiding.β Billy kept staring, studying Stuartβs reaction.
Stuartβs face went from shock, to disbelief, then concern. βWh-what? I thought you and CarlaβIs that why sheβs seeing Christian?β
βNo, sheβs seeing Christian because she likes him.β
βYou two had lunch together yesterday.β
βYeah, weβre friends. Good friends. Sheβs my top girl.β
βShe knows?β
βSheβs known for a long time.β
βUh…β Stuart scratched his head. βWhat a way to start the new millennium. You always do everything with a bang.β
βIβm a Redsky. Fucking rights we do everything with a bang. And we donβt hide. We stand tall and dare anyone to fix us a serving of attitude.β
Tonight, Billy was getting Hoyt for their weekly supper. His brother would probably have shitloads to say.

It’s hard to imagine what it would be like to love someone when your society, your friends, your culture, thinks it is wrong.
You have beautifully portrayed Billy’s courage.
