Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from Two Princes, the first book in the When We Were Young series, a young adult, LGBTQ+ contemporary romance.

To win over the chief’s haughty son, a drug-dealing punk from a dysfunctional family must risk the only two things he has:  his reputation and freedom.

Blurb:  Billy Redsky, a rebellious punk who loves art and nature, is saddled with a welfare-leeching, alcoholic mother and criminal older brother who are the joke of their Ojibway community.  Sick and tired of being perceived as a loser, Billy deals drugs for his older brother to earn quick money.  He hopes if he buys a dirt bike, he’ll finally impress the chief’s popular and aloof son, René Oshawee.

When the two are forced to serve detention together, a friendship begins to bloom, but much to Billy’s frustration, René keeps putting him on ice.  To make his biggest dream come true if he finally wants to call René his own, Billy must make a huge decision that could cost him everything.

Genre(s):  Multicultural Romance, M/M Contemporary Romance, LGBTQ+, Young Adult.
Heat Rating: Level 2

René let out a low whistle, the same whistle Ned had blown this morning. “Dude, you gotta say something to your mom. What’s her prob why she won’t stock the fridge?”

“I told you—she’s a total lush. All she cares about is booze, booze, and more booze.”

“Obsessed, hey? Does she eat?”

“I guess so.”

“You sure? She’s pretty… uh… thin.”

“Thin? Kate Moss is a total cow compared to her. Say it.”

“C’mon, she’s your mom. If anyone dissed my mom, they’d hear from me, big-time.” René shifted gears.

“I don’t care if anyone trash-talks her. She deserves it.”

René slowed for the red light and peeked over the rims of his sunglasses. “Seriously?”

“Yeah.” She didn’t do squat for Billy, so why should he give a shit about her?

“What about your bro?”

“He’s an asshole.”

“Do you dig anyone in your family?”

“No.” All this talk about his pathetic family sizzled beneath Billy’s skin. He was with René. They should rap about cool stuff.

“Then who do you like?”

You. Billy turned his head.

René also turned his head. The black sunglasses shielded his eyes.

A crackling fire simmered in the confines of the cab.

René ran his pink tongue across his upper lip.

The heat under Billy’s skin melted away the tension in his taut muscles. The same quivering electricity from last night when they’d stared at each other up at the lookout point pulsated through his veins. His thudding heart slid to his throat, booming a thunderous beat. Again, air was caught in his windpipe, but this time he wasn’t toking on a joint.

  3. Comes across super clear how he feels about his family, and that the other guy doesn’t get it at all. Quite opposites!
