Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.

For this week’s edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from my most recent publication Twisted Beauty, a m/m dystopian romance.

His community or his enemy.  He can’t have both.

Deep in the badlands, long after the fall of modern civilization, Hunter patrols the area as the war chief for his Lakota community.  His latest mission is to hunt down a marauder who robbed his neighbors of their precious goods.  He’ll act as this man’s judge, jury, and executioner.

Having lost everything at his former Ojibway encampment, Chassis is far from home.  He wanders the badlands, a grim reaper bringing death to those with what he needs to survive.  But there is one man courageous enough to challenge him.

When the duo faces off, neither expects the sizzling chemistry to erupt between them, nor for their duel to touch what both have denied themselves.  Now they must choose to either remain together and sacrifice their beliefs, or go their separate ways, losing what they’ve spent their lives searching for—love.

Genre(s): M/M Dystopian Romance, LGBTQ+, First Nations Romance, Native American Romance

They were going to kill him. Of this Chassis was sure. The community of Voodoo Canyon had too much to lose if they were found out, and dead men couldn’t talk.

He sat in the back of one of the many road racers owned by the defenders. His hands remained bound. Waabooz sat on the passenger seat beside him. If he didn’t figure out a way to get the jump on the duo, she’d probably become tonight’s meal. The kicker was his weapons were secured in the trunk, along with the gasoline, ammunition, and ration of food supplied to him.

His only option was to strangle Tracker whom he sat behind. Renegade drove. These two were quite the pair. One a silent grunter and the other a nonstop jabberer. They were like Mechanix and Hunter. Maybe this was the prerequisite for all driving parties?

They’d already passed the toadstools and were deep in the winding area of the highway. Soon, they’d been on the straightaway. The last stop was the ravine where Chassis had hidden his car.

Both had guns. It was now or never. He wouldn’t stand a chance once they hit the ravine. If he crashed the car, during the wreck he could finish off drawing the life out of Tracker—that was if Chassis lived. But Renegade didn’t pilot the vehicle because Tracker was lazy. The big guy was trained to steer the racer. The Voodoo Canyon defense team always traveled in pairs. The difference between Mechanix and Hunter was that Tracker knew how to drive. Chassis would bet his life on it.

He glanced at Waabooz, secure in her cage. If they rolled over, hopefully she’d survive. He wormed out of the last of the rawhide that would fit perfectly around Tracker’s neck.

“Marauder…” Tracker turned his head, aiming his gun at Chassis. “…you’re not deserving of anything from Voodoo Canyon.”

Chassis froze. Dammit, would they kill him in the car? Highly doubtful. A man of Justice’s rank wouldn’t want a trace of blood in the vehicle. Most important, Justice didn’t want his people to learn he’d ordered a killing in cold blood after making a deal.

Tracker shifted, facing ahead.

Chassis let out the breath he’d held. The guy was trigger-happy. It was now or… He jumped forward, butt off the seat and the rawhide gripped in both hands.
