Romancing Canada's Indigenous People

Snippet Sunday is a group where writers come together to share a few sentences about their current project–whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. For my first post, I am sharing a snippet from my upcoming publication Twisted Beauty, a m/m dystopian romance.

His community or enemy.  He can’t have both.

Deep in the badlands, long after the fall of modern civilization, Hunter patrols the area as the war chief for his Lakota community.  His latest mission is to hunt down a marauder who robbed his neighbors of their precious goods.  He’ll act as this man’s judge, jury, and executioner.

Having lost everything at his former Ojibway encampment, Chassis is far from home.  He wanders the badlands, a grim reaper bringing death to those with what he needs to survive.  But there is one man courageous enough to challenge him.

When the duo faces off, neither expects the sizzling chemistry to erupt between them, nor for their duel to touch what both have denied themselves.  Now they must choose to either remain together and sacrifice their beliefs, or go their separate ways, losing what they’ve spent their lives searching for—love.

Genre(s): M/M Dystopian Romance, LGBTQ+, First Nations Romance, Native American Romance
Heat Rating: Level 4 (violence, dubious consent)
Publication Date: Coming Soon

Hunter held his buddy against his chest and motioned at the car. “I need you to drive.”

Chassis shrugged.  “Toss him in the backseat.  He should be fine.”

“No, you don’t get it.”  Hunter made a face. “I don’t know how, so I need you to drive.”

Chassis blinked.  Come again?  This had to be a joke.  “You don’t know how to drive?”

Hunter glared. “I’m dead serious.”

“I see…”  Chassis slowly shook his head.  How could someone not know how to drive out in the badlands?

Hunter grunted.  “Look, if you help me get him back to the canyon, I’ll make sure you’re well paid for your troubles.”

Even though Chassis had always passed on bargains in the past, his tongue spoke for him before he could allow his brain to join the conversation. “What kind of payment?”

“I don’t know—food, gasoline, some ammunition for your new gun… Look, are you gonna help me or not?  If I don’t get him back to the canyon, he’ll bleed to death.”  Hunter’s tone had a throwing his hands up in frustration vibe to it.

Chassis stepped forward.  Personally, the coyote should eat a bullet and be put out of his misery since this man would cost Hunter his life one day.  “Food, gasoline, ammunition?”

“Yes.”  The reply was filled with growing impatience.

“A ride back to my car, as well?”

“Yes.”

“My knives?”

“Yes, those, too.  Fuck, are you gonna help or not?”

“Okay.  You got yourself a driver.  I’ll take you and your useless buddy back to your campsite, and when we get there, you load your Camaro with jerry cans of fuel and give me back my knives.  And yeah, plenty of ammo.  I don’t give a shit about the food, but I’ll take some anyways.  Before we go, I gotta get my rabbit.”

“Your rabbit?”  Hunter sputtered.  “My buddy is bleeding out.  If we don’t get our asses into gear—”

“She’s out there.  Alone.  I’m not leaving her.”  Anything could be tracking Carrot right at this moment, ready to eat her.

“Then hurry the fuck up.”  Hunter turned toward the car, muttering, “I don’t believe this.  I really don’t believe this.”

Chassis trotted off.  He’d best hurry.  The friend could bleed out fast, but that wasn’t his problem.  A furry critter was his concern.  Not a careless man who could only pilot a car and didn’t even do a good job of that since he’d blown the idiot off the highway earlier.
