Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. Readers can jump from one author to another who share hooks from their current WIP (work in progress) or any previously published books.
For this weekβs edition of Book Hooks, I give you a teaser from Toy Soldiers, book two in the When We Were Young series, a m/m young adult contemporary romance.
Once a thief, always a thief, and if he canβt win the heart of the boy he loves, heβll steal it.
Blurb: Billy Redskyβs made one of his biggest dreams come true, but thereβs a problem. Even though the boy he loves is mere footsteps across the hall from his bedroom, they might as well live a country apart because claiming RenΓ© Oshaweeβs heart is more difficult than Billy anticipates.
Much to Billyβs disgust, RenΓ© canβt accept his true self, so heβs incapable of loving someone else. And all he cares about is living a life the chief and his wife foresee for their youngest son.
If Billy is to finally have what he truly desires, he must stop RenΓ© from running away from who he really is and face the man in the mirror, or what they share will never blossom into true love.
Genre(s): Multicultural, m/m contemporary romance, LGBT, young adult.

RenΓ© leaned in. βI know what Hoyt does to you. I also know what he did to Billy.β
βUmmβ¦donβt get what you mean.β Olivia used her free hand to tap the ash on her cigarette into the ashtray.
βYou know exactly what I mean. You were there the night he beat Billyβs ass. And he beats on yours, too, doesnβt he?β
She kept toying with her hair, head tilted slightly. βWhat do you care?β
βDuh. Of course I care.β He leaned in closer, setting the smoke in the ashtray. βAre you really gonna let him get away with this? A guy who beats on you? Beats on his brother?β
Olivia shrugged.
βIf you tell the truth, itβll be your word against Hoytβs. He wonβt stand a chance. Heβs got a record longer than the Great Wall of China. You can also tell them what he does to you.β
βOh, I get it,β she huffed. She also set her smoke in the ashtray and leaned in, her pink-painted lips an inch from RenΓ©βs. βWhat am I gonna get outta this, hey? Youβre asking me to rat him out. If I do, guess what happens to me? There goes my nights at The Busy Bee. Myβ¦stuff. Parties. I wonβt be able to show my face anywhere.
βRenny, normally Iβd do anything for you, but not this. No way.β She sat back in the booth and folded her arms. βIβm getting the shitty deal here. Billy? Heβs living at your pad. Heβs being handed whatever he wants. Whatβre you willing to give me?β
βMaybe a fresh start?β RenΓ© blinked. All she cared about was partying, drinking, and drugs. βYou can go back to school. Maybe make some real friends.β
βI donβt need new so-called friends. Youβre the only real friend I have. If you want me to out Hoyt, then youβd better give me what I want.β
βWhat do you want?β He did his best to keep the frustration out of his voice.
She sat forward and aimed her long pink nail at his chest. βYou.β
βMe?β He fell back, head almost spinning. βUhβ¦seriously?β This had to be a joke.
βYeah. Iβm dead serious.β She puffed on her cigarette. Her baby-blue eyes were harder than her pink nails.
βWhat do you meanβme?β
βWhat do you think? I wanna fuck you.β She took another drag.
His heart stopped beating for a moment. βIβI donβt get it. Why do you want me?β
βOh, get off it, Renny.β She waved her hand holding the cigarette. βWho doesnβt wanna fuck you?β
First Moxy and now Olivia. This was surreal. The worst part was, the one person he wanted riding his dick was untouchable. He was sitting here, getting an offer of sex, all for Billy. βWhy canβt you simply help me out?β
βHelp you out?β Her mink brows slanted. βHow about helping me out? Iβm simply asking for a good time. Not marriage.β
If RenΓ© said no, Billy would have to take the witness stand, and if the cops searched his old house, theyβd find what heβd stolen. He could end up on probation for fessing up the truth, or even worse, juvenile hall. He was trying to build a new life. A life that could be flushed down the toilet if RenΓ© didnβt agree to Oliviaβs proposition. Billy would also lose his new reputation heβd worked so hard for.
βCan I think about it?β
βSure, but donβt think too long, Renny.β
