2037 was a really bad year.

Lexi Brennan’s best friend was killed in a plane crash. Two weeks later, an intergalactic crisis threatened the fate of humanity. Authorities responded by launching a genocide.

Lexi opposed this vicious attack. Then again, what could she do? An eccentric flight attendant drawn to glamorous trysts, she felt powerless to incite change.

Until tragedy struck close to home. Suddenly, Lexi was forced to acknowledge the widespread atrocities. She uncovered a network of lies along with an opportunity to restore basic human rights. To protect others, Lexi would have to launch a movement that could destroy everything important to her, including her promising new romance.

The guy placed one hand on his chest. Fingers rose and fell with each inhalation. Lexi tilted her head to the side, mesmerized by his rhythmic breathing.

In an instant, the man met Lexi’s gaze, closing the distance between them.

Lexi was struck by a pang of familiarity.

Where have I seen you? She hunted for an elusive memory tucked deep in the recesses of her brain. Did we fly together? Meet on a random layover?

Hotel security swarmed the man, stuffing his contaminated gear into biodegradable antiseptic bags. Eye contact was broken. The moment ended, taking Lexi’s nondescript recollections with it.

All at once, the world came rushing back to her. It was a sonic boom against Lexi’s eardrums. Clinking glasses echoed off the walls, as grating as nails on a chalkboard. Carefree chatter had never felt so offensive.

Patrons returned to their seats and resumed their casual conversations. Lexi closed her eyes for a moment, processing the obscenity of it all. Life was astonishingly fragile for the resistant folks. Here one moment, gone the next. They left behind a trail of blood and a future cut short. A smattering of stunned observers who cared for approximately five minutes then returned to their own lives. Unbothered.

AutoScan—Colin Brennan, a waiter had an episode in the hotel bar just now, Lexi screamed internally, drafting a new message for her brother. She needed Colin’s empathy. He felt things differently. Colin was Lexi’s pulsing heartbeat when numbness descended upon her. It’s wild. People are pretending it didn’t happen. Or maybe they’d rather not think about it.

Lexi was about to send the text when Brandon placed a hand on her arm. She shifted her attention to her coworker.

“Crazy, huh? I hope that teenager is okay,” Brandon murmured.

Lexi nodded, even though it was obvious the poor kid was irreversibly fucked. No chance he had survived. “Me, too.”

Tamika excused herself to get another drink. “Want anything, Lex?”

“Nah, I’m okay.”

“Thank goodness someone called an ambulance,” Brandon reflected. “I was too stunned. Deer in headlights.”

“Making the call was easy. That dude who performed CPR was the brave one.” Lexi glanced back at the man who risked everything to save a stranger. While she watched, security guards gestured toward a narrow hallway. Lexi guessed the man would be escorted to a post-exposure sanitation room.

How do I know you? Lexi marveled at the man’s smooth dark skin and the perspiration dotting his forehead. Surrounded by a huddle of hotel employees, he walked down the hall, offering no response.

Lisa Wilkes is a new author to me, but I want to thank this blog for the introduction.
I look forward to reading her books. Stories about flight attendants, written by a flight attendant.
